Nova Scotia Welcomes First Family Doctors Through Practice Ready Assessment Program

Four new internationally trained family doctors from Nigeria are now ready to work in Nova Scotia.

They are the first to have completed the new Nova Scotia Practice Ready Assessment Program, designed to ensure that family doctors trained outside of Canada meet Nova Scotia licensing requirements. The program allows for more internationally trained family doctors to continue their practice in Nova Scotia once they have shown that they have the required knowledge and skills.

The program is a partnership between the Dalhousie Department of Family Medicine, Nova Scotia Health Authority, College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia, and the Department of Health and Wellness.

The doctors will work in designated communities with demonstrated need for at least three years. They will be practising family medicine in Truro, New Glasgow, Hubbards, and Glace Bay.

Nine potential candidates are currently being interviewed for the next group to go through the program.
